As part of a fugitive task force, I am constantly looking for ways to collect information about the suspects that I am hunting. When we run up against a suspect who has no history of crimes, no family or friends to support him, and no eyewitnesses to come forward, they I have little to go on and this makes for a troubling case. This was the exact situation we found ourselves in when several violent home invasions were occurring in a very upscale neighborhood. Even with increased police presence, the robberies continued.

 

I wound up at our local prison to see if we could find inmates who may have information about our suspect. I knew this was a long shot because inmates will not rat on each other for fear of being attacked or targeted in jail. I discovered that Securus Technologies had recently installed a new inmate call monitoring system, and I was about to see exactly how it worked. This company already has call systems in 2,500 prisons, and CEO Richard Smith and his thousand employees all feel they are working toward one objection of creating a safer world.

 

This system is miles apart from the old call system that we had in our prison. Only a few years ago, we had to dedicate one officer to each phone, and he needed to really pay very close attention to everything that was being said of things slipped through the cracks. It was even harder to collect information back then because you could easily get confused if the inmates were trying to code their conversations from being picked up from my team. The new inmate call monitoring system makes it easier for us to collect information, and the software can identify certain keywords and allow us to pinpoint certain instances where leads were given. The new system is literally doing the work of several officers and allowing us to use those resources elsewhere in the prison.

 

So as soon as I spoke with the technology crew at the jail and they trained me on the LBS software, I was eager to see it in action. Not knowing what to expect, we ran a few things through the system and waited. In wasn’t too long before we got a very promising lead from an inmate who was talking with a friend and happened to mention those burglaries. What grabbed my attention was when the inmate spoke about the stolen goods and where they wound up. We took that information and staked out the location and hit pay dirt. We rely on the Securus Technologies system now anytime we are stuck on a case without leads.
