Betsy DeVos Sets Sights on Public Education As Secretary of Education.

There is a growing sentiment in Washington D.C. that the political world has changed forever. The rise and ensuing election of Donald Trump to the Presidency has forever changed the way the government will look, feel, and operate. President Trump ran a campaign based on bringing outside voices into the inner-workings of the government, and that appears to be exactly what he has done. Leading the way in this new era of administration is Betsy DeVos, a chairwoman from Michigan who made her career out of the fight for school choice. Betsy DeVos was nominated and confirmed to the post of Secretary of Education and in her new position, she will be the focal point of American educational policies for the foreseeable future. While known by niche Republican circles, Betsy DeVos is making her national debut for the first time and it is worth taking some moments in order to get to know her.

While ostensibly soft-spoken and polite, Betsy DeVos has made her entire political career out of being able to stand up for what she believes in. Betsy DeVos is considered the leader of the school choice movement, eventually conceptualized by Milton Friedman, and she didn’t get to that position by accident. Instead, Betsy DeVos has worked tirelessly in order to spread the word and her faith in the school choice movement to every corner of the country. DeVos has taken school choice from the fringes of education directly into the spotlight. Her machinations with school choice have led to 17 states adopting the concept and more than 250,000 students enrolling in private, school choice programs.

In Washington D.C., Betsy DeVos will find herself under fire from members of both major political parties. In being forced to stand up for herself, Betsy DeVos will reveal the political bulldog that has always existed. In fact, she is already winning compliments from members of both political parties. The President of the American Federation of Teachers, Randi Weingarten, says that DeVos is ‘dangerous’ because people tend to underestimate her. Mike Cox, a former attorney general, says that Betsy DeVos is someone who is ‘determined’ and ‘steely’ when she sets out and focuses on a goal to accomplish.
